Artist Statement
My work depicts my compulsion and repulsion towards communication. The objects themselves act as a dialogue between text, image, and viewer. However, that conversation is intentionally crude and nonsensical. I implement bold text design, naive color choices, and an expressive handling of materials to emphasize the chaotic intentions of my work. The most common materials used are acrylic paint, clay, cardboard, and gel mediums.
The content included has its roots in an ever changing personal narrative. The motifs can range from butterflies to five-pointed stars to rainbows to self-portraits. As for the text, I organize it in such a way that is influenced by memes both in font and format. Which in turn dictates the angsty attitude. However, this is not only an aesthetic choice, but it is also an act of interpellation. The goal is to catch the audience off guard with eliciting a laugh followed by careful consideration of the narrative being expressed by the conflicting content.
